A new study suggests that men who use Viagra may be at risk of developing erectile dysfunction (ED).
Researchers found that those who used the drug — known as Sildenafil — developed the condition in part because the drug has a relaxing effect on the smooth muscles in the penis.
However, more research was needed to fully understand why Sildenafil has such a relaxing effect on the male penis.
While Sildenafil has a low systemic side-effect profile, the study did not include a control group, which means it would not be known why men in the study took Viagra.
“This is a very important study,” said Dr. Edward C. Arnold, a professor of urology at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. “It will provide a more comprehensive understanding of what is happening with the erectile function in males.”
In a separate study, researchers looked at a group of men who used Sildenafil to treat impotence.
The researchers found that those who took the drug were at a higher risk of developing ED than the non-users. But more research is needed to determine if this risk may actually be associated with using Viagra.
“There is not enough data to prove that the drug is causing erectile dysfunction,” Dr. Arnold said.
“We know that the drug causes the smooth muscles to relax in the penis, so that can contribute to the increased blood flow and blood flow into the penis. It could even be a function of the other side effects of the drug,” he added.
The study was published in the March issue of the American Journal of Urology.
The researchers examined more than 600 men who used Sildenafil to treat impotence. They compared the results with those who took the drug only once.
The researchers found that those who took the drug were at a higher risk of developing ED. But more research is needed to determine if this risk can actually be related to the use of Viagra.
The researchers also found that men taking the drug had a higher risk of developing ED than men who didn’t take the drug.
In addition, the researchers found that those who used the drug had a lower likelihood of developing ED.
“In our current data, the most recent study we have conducted, we found that those who used Sildenafil are at a higher risk of developing ED compared with the non-users,” said the lead author, Dr. Jennifer L. Buhner, a professor of urology at the University of Alabama at Birmingham.
“This is not the first time the use of Viagra has been linked to ED.”
In 2006, a study published in the Journal of the American Urological Association found that Viagra, which contains Sildenafil, is also associated with a higher likelihood of developing ED than the other two drugs. Viagra and Sildenafil were also shown to have similar side effects.
“Viagra is an effective treatment for ED, but not for all men,” said Dr. Buhner.
“If you are experiencing ED, it is important to seek immediate medical care, such as seeking help from a specialist,” she added.
However, if you are experiencing ED and taking Viagra, there are several other options available, said Dr. Arnaud B. Légar, professor of urology at the University of Montreal.
“If you do get ED, you don’t have to worry about any other ED treatments,” said Légar.
“If you are not experiencing ED, it is important to speak with a healthcare professional, such as a specialist, to discuss your ED and the best treatment option for you,” he added.
Légar added that if you do have ED and are taking other treatments, it is important to speak with a specialist to discuss the options and to discuss Viagra with you.
“If you are not experiencing ED and taking Viagra, there is no reason to stop taking the medication or switch to another treatment,” she added.
In a separate study, researchers compared Sildenafil to a group of men who took Viagra only once.Sildenafil is a prescription-only drug that is used to treat erectile dysfunction.
